The Network Operations and Internet Security Lab at the University of Chicago, led by Neubauer Professor Nick Feamster, develops data-driven, machine-learning systems to derive insights from network traffic. We also explore how network traffic can reveal insights into human behavior. These insights can help us understand and improve network performance, security, and privacy, improve Internet access and affordability, and explore how the proliferation of networked devices can improve social outcomes. We place significant value and emphasis on real-world, deployed systems, and applications to social impact (including public policy at a city, state, and federal level). Past research as resulted in transition to practice through a range of avenues, from startups to influence on public policy (e.g., Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission).
