Our overarching goal is to design, build, and prototype computing systems that are safe, secure, high performance, inexpensive, and low power. If this seems difficult, it is, and these challenges drive our research. Over the years, we have developed systems that solve real-world problems motivated by our scientific and industrial collaborations. Examples include low cost modems for underwater acoustic communication, drones flying multispectral cameras for ecosystem monitoring, vision systems to capture large-scale 3D models of Maya archaeological sites, hardware accelerated systems to automate fish species detection and process of high throughput sonar data, reconfigurable systems for DNA sequencing, and high frame rate 3D scanners for machine vision. We roughly divide our broad research into three areas: hardware acceleration, hardware security, and embedded and cyber-physical systems.
