Overview

My primary research interests are in contestability & recourse: how can we help users shape and influence machine learning systems, particularly when those systems make systematic errors? This connects to a number of other issues and areas, for example,

* explainability and interpretability (how much do users need to understand about a system to influence it?),
* community organization (how can a community express and coordinate their preferences and concerns?), and
* algorithmic experience more generally.

This work often focuses on social computing applications (like news feed curation and content moderation) but I’m also interested in other areas, including fashion and privacy.
