Overview

I am the Founding Chair of Good Systems, a UT Grand Challenge, a campus-wide research grand challenge focusing on designing ethical AI. I am currently conducting NSF-funded research on health disinformation (with Bo Xie and Min Kyung Lee) and smart cities (with Junfeng Jiao, Sherri Greenberg, Devrim Ikizler, and Jason JonMichael of the City of Austin). I also have funded research projects related to leveraging AI to empower people experiencing homelessness (with Sherri Greenberg, Min Kyung Lee, and Steve Slota), studying the user experience of virtual assistants by Black and Latinx youth (with Jakki Bailey and Craig Watkins), the value-sensitive design of smart tools (with Raul Longoria and Sherri Greenberg), and building a city-wide community of practice across social justice-oriented nonprofits, the City of Austin, Huston-Tillotson University and UT-Austin to develop the field of Social Justice Informatics (with Amanda Masino, Saro Mohammed, Paulette Blanc, and many others).
